The Kathy Acker in Seattle Symposium is a site promoting a three-day symposium and a series of art events centered on the late Kathy Acker, from September 12 - 14, 2019, at the Goethe Pop Up Seattle at Chophouse Row on Capitol Hill and at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery in Seattle's Georgetown. Both Goethe Pop Up Seattle and Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery co-presented the symposium.

The symposium featured readings, art exhibitions, and panel talks dedicated to the late writer Kathy Acker who passed away at age 50 following complications from breast cancer at an alternative health clinic in Tijuana, Mexico, in November 1997. The event focuses on Acker's time in Seattle in 1980 in the younger days of her writing career when she was working on her signature early work, Blood and Guts in High School, and -- as a bookend to the The Eighties -- when Acker had an artist residency at the Center on Contemporary Art in Seattle in 1989. At the conclusion of her residency, she had shared the stage with local writer Kathleen Hanna, from Olympia, Washington, and with whom Acker selected to open for her performance.

Acker's large body of literary work has been critically-acclaimed for drawing literary comparisons to William S. Burroughs and Jean Genet. She has been seen by some as an inspirational muse through her books, writing and creative public life to give voice to the emerging Riot Grrrl movement. Aligned with the artist residency at COCA in 1989, Kathleen Hanna credits that experience working with Acker for inspiring her to start her band Bikini Kill later that year which ushered in the RiotGrrrl era of the late Eighties and early Nineties. Afterwards, Hanna later went on to start other bands including Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin, and contributed to span the global reach of RiotGrrrl's influence on music, art, publishing and culture.

The web site is one component of a digital marketing campaign to promote the event in conjunction through an official Facebook page -- including Facebook targeted ad campaigns, Eventbrite event announcements, and email newsletters dispatched through Mailchimp.

Hand-coded using Bootstrap and Material Design Bootstrap from compositions conceived and created using Adobe XD, the site design includes original photography courtesy Randy Eriksen and Louie Raffloer, and textures provided by Retro Supply Co.
